I believe that what we allow to reign in our minds will eventually determine who we are. Proverbs 23:7 best describes what happens, “For as he thinks in his heart so is he.” Who we are can be shaped by what we allow into our minds. We can be affected by what others say about us. If it is positive, we feel built up. But if it is negative, we can be torn down. We also can choose if we will allow others opinions of us to matter. We also have to be careful about our own thoughts. Sometimes, we tear ourselves down. We know that it says in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat of its fruit.” That is why we need to be careful in our words. Sometimes we just randomly blurt out stuff and it eventually comes to pass. We can eat of the fruits of our words. Some may say things like…oh I know I going to get that cold, I always do or another may say I think that I am going to get cancer because it runs in my family or we will never get ahead because its always been like this. The list can go on and on. I am not saying that this might not happen, but sometimes we just align ourselves with the wrong things and then we wonder why things go awry in our lives. Are we eating from the fruit of what we are speaking. Are we speaking death into our finances, our health, our children, our situations?
That is why we need to daily be reading the word of God. God promises tells us that the word will wash and cleanse our mind, the word will sanctify us, the word will make us clean and the word will build up our faith. The word of God also provides us with God’s promises and his truth. We need to read it daily to come to know God and learn to trust in Him. Let me tell in that it is a process. Many of us have spent years dwelling on the wrong thing and it takes time to change stinkin’ thinking. That is why we are told in Philippians 4:8 to dwell on whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue or anything that is praiseworthy – meditate on these tings. Let me tell you, this is not always easy. I have to admit I have found myself in several spirals downward thinking negative thoughts, analyzing situations and trying to determine what it all meant. It added up to a lot of spent energy and unnecessary worry. I found that when I dwell on the good and began to praise God dwelling on the good and being thankful, I began to be uplifted and the joy of the Lord came in.
So today, it would be my prayer that you would be able to hold on to the good reports and give thanks for all things and that no matter what comes, you will renew your mind to hold the thoughts and attitude of the goodness of God in your hearts, so that your fruit will be a blessing and not a curse.
